Whatever Happened To The Jinhua Architecture Park?

Between 2002 and 2006 artist Ai Wei Wei curated the design and oversaw the construction of the Jinhua Architecture Park in Jinhua, China. The seventeen pavilions that sit in the park are from the desks of some of the most talented architects working today, so it was surprising to see that the structures completed just ten years ago are in a premature state of decay.Evan Chakroff, who took these pictures, has written a long piece about the park, the tradition of Chinese gardens, and how these structures are slowly “disappearing into the landscape.” His takeaway from visiting the park is that architecture, like art, must be maintained and repaired if it is expected to survive for very long. What’s less clear is how long the structures in Jinhua were expected to endure in the first place.

OMG YES

I’m nearly a month late to comment on this, but what’s described here - the bubble phenomenon of Silicon Valley as an industry town, and the double edge of the cult of entrepreneurship - is still relevant. This is one reason why working at Tumblr is refreshing: it’s arguably a product of this bubble mentality but not really part of it.

They were designed by different sculptors and architects, conveying powerful visual impact to show the confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. In the 1980s, these monuments attracted millions of visitors per year, especially young pioneers for their ‘patriotic education.’ After the Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned, and their symbolic meanings were forever lost. From 2006 to 2009, Kempenaers toured around the ex-Yugoslavia region with the help of a 1975 map of memorials, bringing before our eyes a series of melancholy yet striking images.”

Wave Garden by Yusuke Obuchi

As an alternative to nuclear power and other conventional energy sources, the Wave Garden is an electric power plant that derives energy from the movement of ocean waves. Its piezo-electro membrane is a flexible electric generator, where bending the material or applying stress creates an electric charge. Conversely, applying electric current to the membranes causes it to deform. Monday through Friday, it generates energy, but at the weekends, the Wave Garden changes into a public garden - thus changing from a space of production to one of recreation and consumption. During the weekends, selected areas lift above the surface of the ocean, acting as a ceiling under which boats approach the entrances.

i think people are in awe at articulation. articulation of things they think, believe, want to believe, see, feel, wonder about.

i often truly understand something, but when someone else articulates it so well, i feel a surge of speechlessness…. as i could not have concisely conveyed my understanding in as elegant a form….

whether or not that actually speaks to true understanding or not.. well thats a different issue

I’m super annoyed at this paragraph. In an article about academics doing a proper study of marriages between Jews and Asians in America, (which is actually not uninteresting: the majority of Jewish-Asian couples have graduate degrees, offspring tend to be raised Jewish) the author of the piece thinks it’s somehow helpful to breezily include the above anecdotes as if they have any relevance. Newsflash: literally everyone in ~~New York~~ ~~America~~ the world eats crappy Chinese takeout, except for maybe Chinese people who wouldn’t be caught dead in one of those chicken wings and chow mein corner joints.
